Westy Drone Soccer Team Competes In South Korea

When graduates of the Westminster High School Class of 2023 walk across the stage to get their diplomas on Saturday, three students won’t be with them– but that’s okay. They will be on the other side of the globe at the FIDA World Drone Soccer Championship.

Xavier Culp, Jonathon Villalobos and Luis Lechuga along with Junior Helen Tran and coach Robbie Ferguson were picked to join the U.S. National Team competing in Incheon. Westminster High School’s CTE (Career Technical Education) program embraced the sport early and has been at the forefront of a sport that is exploding in popularity.

Before leaving on the trip earlier this month, the U.S. team competed in a “friendly” match at the AUVSI (Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International) XPONENTIAL 2023 at the Colorado Convention Center.

9News and CBS4 news joined the students at the event to learn more about the sport and the players headed to South Korea.
